Wonderful, yes. It turns out if you go to the "bad" part of town you find out it is comprised of people -- regular people: families, children, youth, parents, elders ... All those people wake up each morning and try to find hope in the world, just like everyone else. Do you have a bit of hope to offer? Don't just stay out of the alley, clean up the alley, fix the playground, insulate the homes, repair the cars, fill the backpacks with fruits, vegetables and good things to eat. Dig a community garden, water it, reap the rewards by lower crime rates, healthier citizens and a deeper understanding of humanity. And, while you're at it, stop tolerating intolerance.

The best self defense is being prepared for everything. Checking the batteries in your smoke alarms is part of doing that. Knowing how to defend yourself against fists, knives, and guns is another part of that. Eating healthy and exercise is another part of that. The truth is we'll never be fully prepared for everything that could possibly happen, but we can stay aware of the risks we face every day. Do I know that I'll get a flat tire driving to work tomorrow? No, but I can make sure that I know how to change a tire and that my spare tire has enough air to get me by. That is the true definition of self-defense. It's not in martial arts, it's not in gun skills, while those are valuable and need to be practiced, they are only one aspect of the full ratio of what it means to be able to defend oneself. Without knowledge, a black belt is just cloth.

Some people still live in situations in which they need to daily be concerned with an attack from another person using guns, knives, or fists. For most of us, however, the bigger threats are heart disease, diabetes, COPD, etc. Smart self defense defends against the more likely threats. Plenty of people have come up with plans to defend their homes against zombie invasion, but since that is (fingers crossed) highly unlikely, they probably would be doing better self defense by checking the batteries in their smoke alarms.

Did you check the ages of your competitors? I'm just sayin' -- there aren't many your age who still push themselves as you do. Perhaps most school owners do not actively seek ways to sharpen their skills and challenge their own mastery. I think your performance and attitude send ripples out in the waters of instructors and encourage thoughts of benefits rather than risks of performance. Even if you participated in the masters' demonstrations instead of competed, those ripples would still go out.
